The Four Parts of Medicare (2026)

🏥

Part A — Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing, hospice, and some home health care. Most people pay no premium. The 2026 deductible is $1,676 per benefit period.

Part B — Medical Insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, and preventive services. The standard 2026 premium is $202.90/month with a $283 deductible — then you pay 20% with no annual cap, which is why Medigap or Medicare Advantage matters.

Part C — Medicare Advantage

Private plans bundling A + B and usually drug coverage. Many Connecticut plans have $0 premiums plus dental, vision, and hearing — with annual out-of-pocket maximums of $3,000–$8,000.

Part D — Prescription Drugs

Standalone drug plans for Original Medicare. The 2026 out-of-pocket cap is $2,000 per year. Formularies change annually — your plan should be reviewed every fall.

Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Medicare Advantage Medigap + Part D
Monthly premium Often $0 ~$150–$300 + Part D
Doctor network HMO/PPO networks Any doctor accepting Medicare
Out-of-pocket cap $3,000–$8,000/year Minimal with Plan G
Referrals Often required Never required
Extras (dental, vision) Usually included Purchased separately
Best for Budget-focused, local care Frequent care, travel, predictability

There is no universally “best” option — it depends on your health, doctors, prescriptions, and travel habits. We run the numbers both ways for you, including Medigap plans.

Enrollment Windows That Can Cost You for Life

Missing your Initial Enrollment Period

Your 7-month IEP starts 3 months before your 65th birthday month. Missing it triggers a permanent Part B penalty of 10% per 12-month delay, added to your premium for life.

Skipping drug coverage

Each month without creditable drug coverage adds a permanent 1% penalty to your Part D premium. A two-year delay costs roughly $8.78/month extra — forever.

Your one guaranteed Medigap window

Your 6-month Medigap open enrollment (starting when Part B begins) is your one chance to buy any Medigap plan with no health questions. After it closes, you can be denied or charged more.

Review your plan every fall

Medicare Advantage and Part D plans change networks, benefits, and formularies every year. We review your plan each Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7) at no charge.
