A second look, not just a first enrollment

Many of the Medicare conversations we have with Newport Beach residents are not about turning 65. They are about a Medigap plan bought a decade ago whose premium keeps rising, an Advantage plan whose network changed, or a drug list that no longer matches the Part D formulary. Coverage that was right at 65 is not automatically right at 75, and most people never compare again once they are enrolled.

Our office is in Irvine. Instead we work with you by phone or video, or meet in person by appointment elsewhere in Orange County — whichever is easier for you and, often, for an adult child who wants to sit in.

What a Newport Beach Medicare review covers

  • Repositioning an older Medigap plan. California’s Birthday Rule gives you an annual window around your birthday to switch to a Medigap plan with equal or lesser benefits without answering health questions. We check whether a different insurer offers the same plan letter for less. See our Orange County Medicare Supplement page.
  • Doctor and specialist access. If keeping specific physicians matters most, we compare how Medigap and the Advantage plans in your ZIP code treat them. Our guide to Medigap vs. Advantage with a chronic condition walks through the trade-offs.
  • Part D and your prescriptions. We run your actual medication list against the formularies of the plans we offer. See Part D in Orange County.
  • IRMAA. Higher-income households can pay an income-related surcharge on Part B and Part D premiums, set by Social Security from tax returns filed a couple of years earlier. A one-time event such as a business sale or a large Roth conversion can trigger it, and a life-changing event such as retirement can be grounds to ask for a redetermination. We explain the mechanism; your CPA confirms the numbers.
  • Travel. If you spend part of the year away from Orange County, we look at how each option handles care outside the local network.

How the review works

  1. Book a time that suits you — phone, video, or in person by appointment in Orange County.
  2. We list what you have: plan, premium, doctors, prescriptions and travel habits.
  3. We compare it with the plans we offer in your ZIP code. For a Medicare Advantage or Part D discussion we complete a Scope of Appointment form first, as Medicare rules require.
  4. You decide. Keeping your current plan is often the answer, and we will say so.

For independent, non-commercial counselling you can also contact HICAP, and plan details are published on Medicare.gov.

Newport Beach Medicare questions

My Medigap premium keeps going up. Can I switch without new underwriting?

Often, yes. Under the California Birthday Rule you can move to a Medigap plan with equal or lesser benefits each year around your birthday without health questions. We compare insurers offering the same plan so you can see whether a switch makes sense.

Can my son or daughter join the call?

Yes. Many clients include a family member or someone who helps with their finances. Video calls make that easy even if they live out of state.

Is it worth leaving Medicare Advantage for Medigap?

It depends on your health and whether an insurer will accept you. Outside certain guaranteed-issue situations, moving to Medigap can require medical underwriting, so we check that before you give anything up.
