Expert Answers

What is the ACA marketplace (Access Health CT)?

Access Health CT is Connecticut’s official health insurance marketplace created under the Affordable Care Act. It allows individuals and families to compare and purchase health insurance plans, and to apply for premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions that lower the cost of coverage. Open enrollment typically runs from November 1 to January 15 each year.

How much are ACA subsidies in Connecticut?

ACA premium tax credits are based on household income relative to the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). In 2026, a family of 4 earning $60,000 (about 200% FPL) could receive approximately $1,200/month in premium tax credits. Subsidies are available for households earning up to 400% FPL, though those earning less than 150% FPL often qualify for $0 or near-$0 premium plans.

What is the difference between premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions?

Premium tax credits lower your monthly premium payment and are available to those earning 100-400% of the Federal Poverty Level. Cost-sharing reductions (CSRs) lower your deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket maximums, but are only available with Silver plans for those earning up to 250% FPL. CSRs make Silver plans effectively better than Gold or Platinum for lower-income households.

When can I enroll in ACA marketplace plans?

Open Enrollment runs from November 1 to January 15. You can also enroll during a Special Enrollment Period if you have a qualifying life event like losing other coverage, getting married, or having a baby.

How do I know if I qualify for subsidies?

Subsidies are based on household income relative to the Federal Poverty Level. Generally, those earning 100-400% of FPL qualify. Use our subsidy calculator to estimate your savings.

What if I’m self-employed?

Self-employed individuals can purchase coverage through Access Health CT. You may qualify for subsidies based on your projected income. Health insurance premiums may also be tax-deductible.

Can I keep my doctor with marketplace plans?

It depends on the plan’s network. Before enrolling, we’ll help you verify that your preferred doctors and hospitals are in-network for any plan you’re considering.
