What is a Benefit Period?

A benefit period begins when you’re admitted as an inpatient and ends when you’ve been out of the hospital or SNF for 60 consecutive days. The $1,736 deductible applies to each new benefit period.

Standard Costs

IRMAA Surcharges (Based on 2024 Income)

Higher-income beneficiaries pay Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amounts (IRMAA) in addition to the standard premium.

Late Enrollment Penalty

If you don’t sign up for Part B when first eligible, you may pay a penalty of 10% of the premium for each 12-month period you could have had Part B but didn’t. This penalty applies for life. At 2026 rates, each year delayed adds approximately $20.29/month permanently.

2026 IRA Drug Cost Cap

Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, 2026 marks the first year with a $2,000 annual out-of-pocket cap for Part D drugs. Once you spend $2,000 on covered medications, you pay nothing more that year. This replaces the previous "catastrophic coverage" phase that still required 5% coinsurance.
